About Hernias

A hernia is an abnormal protrusion of body contents into another part of your body.A common example is an umbilcal hernia where fat or bowel protrudes from your abdomen where it should be through and outside the body wall.
There are many types of abdominal wall hernias. Some of the commonest are shown below
What causes a hernia?Well most of would know sudden exertion like lifting a heavy object can cause the pressure inside your abdomen to increase forcing the hernia out through a weakness in the abdominal wall.Often it is an "awkward lift"-twisting and pulling while lifting. It's why work safety education stresses the importance of proper lifting with your knees.I hear a lot of grandparents telling me they get theirs lifting toddlers and small children up!
People also think their hernias have "blown a hole " in their abdominal wall. Most often though it is through a pre-existing weakness -like the umbilicus or the inguinal canal. It's more making a hole in your abdominal wall larger rather than making a new defect
How do we repair your hernia?
After taking a careful history of your hernia and examining your hernia we will discuss treatment options for your hernia .The consultation and examination process is a form of risk assessment.Do the benefits of hernia surgery to you outweigh the risks of hernia surgery to you?
If the decision is you need a hernia operation we will discuss the type of hernia surgery suitable for you based on things like previous abdominal surgery, hernia size and your other medical conditions.
There are 2 types of hernia surgery.
Laparoscopic or keyhole hernia surgery and open surgery
Keyhole surgery is our preferred technique for your hernia-in particular inguinal hernias- but we also do a lot of open surgery if keyhole hernia surgery is considered not safe
Keyhole hernia surgery involves using a camera ,usually placed underneath the umbilicus using a 10mm cut to visualise the hernia and using working ports ,usually two of these to allow our tools to be placed. These two working ports are placed with 5mm cuts. You can see a diagram below that illustrates this.
If your hernia is repaired laparoscopically a mesh will be used.
The mesh integrates into the abdomainal wall providing a strong and longlasting repair
